God’s Servant’s In The Workplace

September 2021

Many years ago, I witnessed a contracted employee go above and beyond the call of duty in assisting an elderly woman find her way back to her hotel room. The young man stated, “Mrs. Kennedy is staying at a hotel across town and is unfamiliar with the public transportation system in the city. I get off work in a few minutes and if you give your consent, I will ride the bus with her and get her to her hotel room safely.” There was something special about this young man who possessed sincerity and genuine concern about the woman’s well-being, so I gave my consent for him to further assist in this situation. The next day, I contacted the company that he was contracted through and stated that he had gone above and beyond the call of duty and should be acknowledged for providing outstanding customer service and a job well done. Later I learned that the young man contacted the elderly woman’s son to make him aware of the situation and ensured him that he would assist his mom in arriving safely at the hotel. The two men engaged in conversation about their lives and had come to learn that although from different backgrounds they shared one common thread and that was they are both Christian. Years have come and gone then finally one day I had seen the young man once again in the workplace. He reminded me about the situation with the elderly woman whom he brought to safety and through our conversation, we realized that we had more in common than the events that transpired that day. In conversation, we spoke about how serving others who are in need is so very important and that once we learned that each of us is Christian, we understood how our servanthood is right in line with the word of God. Since then, the elderly woman’s son and the servant in the workplace have remained friends and continue to build upon their relationship not only with each other but with Christ Jesus as well.
